About the Artist.

Inti Callaghan’s practice explores the beauty and complexity of native flora and fauna from lutruwita/Tasmania through highly detailed coloured pencil works. Focusing on the miniscule structures of the natural world, particularly those connected to reproduction, adaptation and environmental change, her work encourages viewers to consider the relationship between nature and human impact. Each work is grounded in observation and research, depicting the functionality of an organism and often highlighting the interconnected relationships of the landscape that it exists within.

Storytelling is embedded throughout Inti’s work, with plants and animals acting as representatives of childhood memories and family history tied to the west coast landscapes that she grew up around. Through immersion in wild places, alongside photography, sketching and colour testing, Inti develops works that connect personal memory with ecological and historical accounts. Using coloured pencil requires patience and control, with each layer gradually building light, shadow and texture. This slow process allows the work to retain the detail of the subject, as well as solidify the narrative of Inti’s life experiences.
